Monofilament Wigs

Monofilament wigs are also referred to as skin-top wigs. These tops consist of even a finer and lighter weight mesh than the hand-tied. This involves an extremely delicate process where each individual strand of hear is knotted by hand on the fine nylon monofilament or polyester net base. These are the lightest in weight, most comfortable. Because of its thin nature the natural scalp may be revealed and it is best for people with no hair. They are also most comfortable for these people, in which harder caps may cause itching.

Many wigs come with monofilament tops, yet use wefts around the back. The benefits of wefts are that they are much cheaper and the top is really the part that needs the delicate styling. Also, in the case of non custom- out of the box wigs- the wefts come with Velcro tabs which are adjustable- so the wig will not fall off the head. This is most important for people with non average heads.

A few years ago monofilaments were reserved for the high quality wigs. However, today, even cheaper lower quality wigs are often made with monofilament caps. Of course the monofilament caps bring up the price somewhat, but not nearly as much as higher quality hair would.

People using wigs with an extra cover up have to think harder before investing in a monofilament wig, because they only receive the benefit of easier and nicer styling- not of comfort or of seeing the scalp. However there are white caped wigs which would give their head a white scalp appearance.
