Have you ever flipped through a magazine or looked up at the figure on stage longingly? The charisma, the vivaciousness, the glamor of many superstars lies at the top. That's right, those stunning styles, those daring do's, long perfect strands, full, rich curls, and just the right color can turn an everyday ordinary person into the luminary you see before your eyes.
Some of the mot beautiful and enviable women on stage cull their good looks from a well-crafted celebrity wig. Cher and Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera, Jessica and Ashley Simpson, Victoria Beckham and Britney Spears, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani, Raquel Welch, Lady Gaga, Diana Ross, Tyra Banks, Ashanti, Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Judith Light, and Halle Berry are just a few of the many celebrities who wear wigs on an occasional or full-time basis. These beautiful women of the stage are just a few of the female celebrities with wigs who owe a large part of their persona to the head coverings that adorn them so faithfully.
Women are not the only celebrities with wigs. Many of your favorite male actors and performers have also taken to the habit of wearing hairpieces to cover up a receding hair line, balding or patches of hair loss. In fact, male wig wearing has been around longer than the female version. As far back as the ancient Egyptians, both men and women wore wigs for various reasons. In Europe, aristocracy used to wear wigs to prevent lice from spreading to their hair and royalty, judges and other prominent members of society wore wigs as a status symbol.
Though not entirely confirmed, stars such as Robert de Niro, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Billy Bob Thornton, Kevin Spacey, Robert Redford, Quentin Tarantino, Carrot Top, Howard Stern, Little Richard, Michael Jackson, William Shatner, Andre Agassi, and Robin Williams have all been rumored to sport wigs or toupees of some sort. Even young actors like Mathew McCaughnehey and Ben Affleck are said to wear hairpieces on many occasions. Some of these Hollywood heroes have even come out in the open about their wig wearing habits. Many celebrities who wear wigs will even don wildly unrealistic novelty versions for fun or fame. The underlying attitude behind these celebrities' wigs seems to be 'Once the world knows you are wearing a wig, why not have fun with it?'
In fact, most celebrities out there today are wearing some form of hairpiece. From toupees to wigs or simple extension, celebrity wigs are standard among the rich and famous. A new line of wigs has been termed "Celebrity Wigs", attempting to mimic popular celebrities' wigs. So now you have to ask yourself the question, "If they can do it, why can't I?"
