Jersey
Jersey Overview
Jersey is a soft, plain slightly elastic knit cloth made from wool, worsted, rayon, synthetics, cotton or silk. Jersey is knitted using circular, flat-bed or warp knitted methods. The right side of the fabric has lengthwise ribs and the wrong side has crosswise ribs.
Jersey characteristics
Jersey can either be knitted plain or with elaborate tweed and printed designs, and can look similar to woven fabric. It is a very elastic material with good draping qualities and also has special crease- resistant qualities due to its construction.
Jersey History
The name of the fabric originates from Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands off the English coast, where the material was first produced and used for fisherman's clothing.
What is Jersey used for?
Jersey is used to create a close-fitting, machine-knitted pullover with sleeves which is known as "the Jersey." Jersey is the name often used in the United Kingdom to refer to the cardigan or sweater worn as part of the military or police uniform. Jersey can also be used in the design of dress wear, suits, sports wear, underwear, coats, gloves, sweaters and hats.
Care of Jersey
After washing Jersey items, the fabric is likely to tighten. Reshape the item of clothing whilst it is damp, so that it remains in the correct shape and size.
