Doll Sewing Projects
Homemade sewn dolls have always been a delightful pastime. Since your grandmother's grandmother was a child, these items have been produced, at first by hand, and then on machine, in the homes of nearly every family blessed with a little girl. These dolls are simply precious, and inevitably become family heirlooms. Because of their detail and beauty, homemade sewn dolls are literally fought over. Dolls from earlier generations are sold and collected as antiques, and will often go for exorbitant amounts of money. But then, how can one put a price tag on centuries of tradition?
From a young age, girls were taught to do all the household responsibilities. This included sewing. A common practice was to create one of these handmade dolls, adding accessories and wardrobe as expertise was built. This was a helpful skill-building exercise, and a playmate for the child as well. What was left behind was a wealth of collectibles for our current generation to marvel over.
Today, the tradition continues, as young girls (and boys), and even adults take comfort in the act of making home made sewn dolls, and reap great pleasure from the finished products. You can keep it going as well. Doll sewing has spread across the Internet like wildfire, igniting interest in this time-honored practice. There are websites abound replete with information, instructions and tutorials, clothing and accessory advice, and other tips and tricks of the trade.
