Do It Yourself Costume Ideas Part Three

Do It Yourself Costume Ideas Part Three

Print Version Email To A Freind

Here's our third and final chapter in the series of do it yourself costume ideas. These do it yourself costume ideas are geared towards adults. Whether it is for a Halloween party, a costume ball, or a fun dinner party with friends, we have tons of ideas for you. With these excellent do it yourself costume ideas, you will be the hit of the party, and the recipient of many compliments throughout the evening.

Here are some do it yourself costume ideas that you can play around with. Alter them in whatever way you like to really make them fit your personality.

~ A cowboy is an easy costume to throw together. Get a brown leather hat (preferably with a star attached by a chin strap!), cowboy boots, and a leather vest with tassels. Wear a denim shirt and jeans, and tie a kerchief around your neck. Chew on a piece of straw or the like to complete the picture! ~

~ Cops and robbers are a fun costume idea. The uniform blue button down shirt and navy pants are easy enough to find. Buy a cheap police officer hat or vest (so people know exactly what you are dressed up as), and use props like hand cuffs, plastic gun, and a box of Dunkin' Donuts! ~

~ No costume party is complete without its share of pirate and wench costumes. While a woman can accommodate either of these designs, I don't think men have it in them to properly pull off the wench costume (although I know there are some guys out there who will try, and come very close to succeeding!) The pirate should wear a pair of black sweat pants with one leg rolled up to the knee. A dirty white button down shirt or a tight stripped t-shirt work well on top. A black vest also adds to this costume. If you can find an old and beaten wig of long black hair, wear that under a bandana. Go barefoot or use short black boots that are heavy and bulky. Use an eye patch, fake sword, hip flask or gold pouch as personals. ~

~ A wench requires a low-cut peasant shirt or dress, a flowing many-tiered skirt, and a corset type vest to be worn over the shirt. By all rights, a wench should be generously endowed. If you simply don't fit this description, you can simulate the effect with strategically placed socks (unrolled, of course). Wear big loud earrings too. They're fun and add zest to the outfit. Laugh often and big (it's what's expected!) ~

~ Athletes are another popular group of do it yourself costume ideas. If you have your old college uniform, this works the best, but if not, you can still get it together. Wear a jersey of any sort and shorts for basketball, tight white leggings for football, and sweat pants for hockey. Wear shin guards, shoulder pads, helmet, and any other gear you can find around. Carry a token piece of equipment (stick for hockey, bat for baseball, pigskin for football etc.), as well. ~

~ Here's a hilarious outfit you might want to try. Regardless of your weight or size, turn your body into that of a genuine sumo wrestler! To make this costume look really good, you will need some time, patience, and a sewing machine. Buy that stretchy synthetic polyester material that some beanbag pillows are made of; the kind that is soft and smooth. Buy enough to create a full body suit for yourself. Measure, cut and sew a body suit that is not skin tight, but has a little room all around. Sew an invisible zipper down the entire length of the suit (or at least until your legs). Next, get into your suit, and stuff it with as much stuffing as the material can handle. You can use anything from poly-fill stuffing to towels and pillows from around the house. Periodically have a friend try and zip you up to make sure you aren't over stuffing yourself. Stuff evenly and smoothly to give a realistic impression. Finally, fashion a cloth diaper from strong black material to wrap around your "privates". If you have the hair for it, tie it up in a tight bun at the top of your head, and walk around bowing to people and muttering strange barely audible grunts of sound. ~

~ Mainly because it's so easy to make fun of them, celebrities are an obvious choice for do it yourself costume ideas. Wear a lot of makeup and a little clothing and you can be any number of models, actresses, or performers you "admire". Wigs, masks, and other paraphernalia are sold everyone for just this purpose. Buy a few funny props, and use things you have around the house to fill in the rest. Pay attention to detail, that's what will make a celeb costume realistic and humorous. Your hair and face should be your focal points when attempting to portray a certain TV personality (unless their fame was gained specifically through other body parts like…the headless horseman). Clothing is often interchangeable and items that you have in your own closet (possibly modified slightly). Take a picture of your prototype from a magazine or newspaper (preferably color), and get to work on duplicating it. ~

~ Medusa is a great costume idea to try. Use hangers or other flexible but firm material covered in fabric to create a head of serpents. You can be as simple or elaborate as your personality allows with these snakes. I've seen incredible detail go into this part of the costume. You can attach each individual snake to a headband for easy application. There are different opinions about what Medusa actually looked like as far as skin tone and attire, but I think whatever you do will be fine as long as you have the snake headgear. Use face paint to paint your entire face a greenish or silver tint, and wear a long black robe or other black clothing. (Again, these are just ideas. If you want to portray Medusa differently, I certainly won't object!) ~

Another fun thing to try is dressing up as a couple. You can do the male and female version of something (example: fireman and woman) or a male character and his female sidekick/counterpart (example: Homer Simpson and Marge). You and your spouse can dress up like your favorite TV couple. This can be done for whichever couple you and your spouse might prefer. As we said earlier, simply play heavily on their idiosyncrasies and characteristic props and wardrobe. You can also do something that is totally not gender related like Hershey's Hugs™ and Kisses ™. Here are some other couple ideas that I thought were cute.

~ Dress up as a magician and his rabbit. Be sure to make a giant hat to pull her out of! ~

~ Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde costumes are sure to humor anyone who's ever seen you or your spouse during mood swings! (Just be ready for comments like 'Well that explains the other day!') ~

~ Mother Nature and Father Time are sweet classics that you can embellish upon, and add your own flair to. ~

~ How about the devil and the angel? No insinuations! ~

~ Here's a really funny one; the cannibal and his dinner! ~

I'm throwing in one last paragraph of do it yourself costumes ideas for all those people not so into dressing up. If you don't want to be the party pooper, but you just don't get all the hype about this costume stuff, these were made for you.

~ Be a nudist colony member on strike. Wear your regular clothing, and hold up or tape a sign to your back that says "Nudist on strike!" ~

~ If you aren't interested in any props at all you can walk around with a limp, and tell everyone you're lame (do you get it?!). ~

~ This will sometimes make people laugh. Dress as you normally would, and, when asked what you are, grin widely and say, "A mirror. Pretty scary, huh?" ~

~ Come to the party with half your shirt untucked, one shoe missing, and your hair disheveled. When anyone tries to talk to you, look at them with a glassy stare and say, "Are you my mother?" Your friends will think it's funny, but you may start to get strange looks from the other members of the party! ~

I hope you enjoyed our friendly costume suggestions. With a little creativity and patience, you can create the perfect party costume for you or your kids. Whichever idea you choose, have fun with it. This is for a party, after all, so why not start the fun a little earlier!
